Rights and Permissions for Content on the CML Website

  • Since its founding in 1989, the Center for Media Literacy has been committed to making media literacy information and resources available for wide low-cost distribution while at the same time, receiving just compensation for expenses incurred and respecting the creative talent and insights of those who have contributed to the development of thought in the field over time.
  • All materials on this site are copyrighted by CML or by the author, who in majority of cases, has given us permission to post the work on the CML website.  We have also been granted the right from most, but not all, to authorize permission for further distribution for educational use only. Over 90% of the CML website content is cleared for reuse.
  • With growing demand to re-use these resources for classes, college coursepacks, teacher training workshops, graduate seminars, etc., we have established a relationship with the Copyright Clearance Center  (CCC) to administer all requests for permission to reprint or reuse,  whether in print or in an electronic format.  A small fee may be collected by the CCC to cover costs of administering this service.

We ask you to respect copyright and abide by the following policies related to content on the CML website, especially the articles and lesson plans in the Reading Room as well as the documents, handouts and components that make up the CML MediaLit Kit / A Framework for Learning and Teaching in a Media Age.™

A.  Permission to Re-use or Reprint:

1. PERSONAL USE:
If you are a single individual or a teacher in a established educational institution, you may, following Fair Use precedents, download a single copy of anything on the CML site for personal use – at no charge.

2. CLASSES AND COURSES:
If you would like to reuse material from this site for further distribution to others (whether electronic or print), you must receive permission from the Copyright Clearance Center.  This category of uses includes the assigning of students to download individual copies of documents or sections of documents, to be discussed or referenced in an educational setting.

3. SCHOOLS AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS
    PUBLISHERS AND PRODUCERS
    TRAINING COMPANIES
    PROFESSIONAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICE PROVIDERS:

a. Single articles or documents:
If you would like to reuse material from this site for further distribution to others (whether electronic or print), you must receive permission from the Copyright Clearance Center.

b. CMl’s MediaLit Kit™ / A Framework for Learning and Teaching in a Media Age
If you wish to reprint or re-use sections, charts, handouts, extensive quotations or essays from the CML’s MediaLIt Kit™ for distribution to others, you must obtain permission from CCC.

B.  Licensing the CML MediaLit Kit™

As an established and credible framework for building out a media literacy program  the CML MediaLit Kit ™  is a ready-to-use package available for adoption and licensing, much as computer software is licensed by users to facilitate applying the potential power of computing to achieve specific ends.

If you wish to use the major concepts or principles of the MediaLit Kit™ as a foundation or framework for facilitating specific ends, for example creating an on-line course to be taught regularly  or to develop a published curriculum that involves distribution to others, you’ll need to explore licensing the MediaLit Kit ™ framework from the CML.

An approved license includes permission for print or electronic duplication and distribution of any of the theories and tools created under the MediaLit Kit™ umbrella. You may further use it as the foundation for the development of new articulations or to create new tools although we ask that core components such as the Five Key Questions or the Five Core Concepts may not be changed or altered in their language, order or style.

The Copyright Clearance Center does not handle licensing requests. For additional information on licensing the CML MediaLit Kit™, contact : Tessa Jolls.

We welcome opportunities to partner, co-brand or work together to bring the skills of media literacy to the widest audience possible.  Consulting services at the earliest stage possible may also be arranged.

How to Receive Permission to Reuse:

You will find the following “reuse” icon on every article on the CML website.

LOGO WILL GO HERE

When you find the article -- or articles --  that you wish to reuse, click the icon to find out,

  1. If the article is available for reuse or not;
  2. If it is available, you will be able to access a link direct to the Copyright Clearance Center.  In most cases, permission will be returned by e-mail within 24 hours.  To aggregate several requests for permission at one time, follow the prompts for “Multiple permissions.”

Remember, the Copyright Clearance Center only administers the permission process.  You may download your document(s) at any time from this website but to legally reprint or reuse them, you need to obtain written permission.
